What You Need to Know About Underlayment for Your New Floor

Engineered hardwood is a possibility when you prefer a genuine wood surface. Because of its stable core, it resists humidity changes much better than solid wood, and solid wood is not recommended below grade. Install it with an appropriate underlay for the best results.

Installing it tends to be more flexible. Based on the product, engineered wood can be floated, glued down or nailed. That flexibility helps make it a top choice for renovators and homeowners across the country.

If you share your home with little ones and four-legged friends, you have probably learned that floors take a beating. Pet nails, toy cars and blocks, spills and wet paws quickly stain a poorly chosen floor in no time. Fortunately: modern flooring products are made to survive everyday chaos.

Can you use wood in a kitchen or bathroom? Some modern laminates are a valid option for kitchens, if water is cleaned up quickly. Engineered hardwood may also work in kitchens with caution, but in bathrooms, vinyl or tile are the safer choices.

Homes in Canada go through significant changes in temperature and humidity every year. During winter, heating systems pull moisture from the air; in the warm months, humidity climb sharply. For wood floors, this cycle can cause gapping, warping and noise.

Important: some vinyl and laminate products come with a built-in underlay. When that is the case, adding a second layer may lead to problems and void the warranty. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Turning a basement into living space is a great way to increase the usable space and value to your home. But below-grade spaces come with special challenges: cold concrete, moisture and lower temperatures. Choosing the wrong flooring may result in mildew, buckling and costly repairs.

Porcelain tile is very water-resistant, although it feels cold if you do not install a heated floor system. Wall-to-wall carpet, meanwhile, feels warm but may hold moisture, so rugs over a hard floor are usually a more practical choice.

If you plan to put your house on the market in the near future, or you just want to refresh your living space, new flooring ranks among the best investments you can make. The floor make up almost every square foot of your home, so they make a big effect on first impressions.

First of all, check the moisture level in the slab. A quick test such as taping a square of plastic onto the slab for a day or two can show if moisture is rising. Fix drainage issues prior to installing any floor.

One of its main jobs is to provide acoustic insulation. Floors that are not glued down can sound hollow without proper underlayment. A quality underlayment reduces that hollow sound, which is especially useful in condos where building rules frequently demand a minimum IIC or STC rating.

Buyers notice floors immediately. Worn carpet, scratched hardwood or chipped tile send the impression suggesting that the house has been neglected. On the other hand, beautiful updated floors can make a house look clean and modern, and that may help attract more buyers.

When people shop for flooring, most of the attention goes to colour, the style and price. Yet what you put under your planks plays an equally important role. The right underlayment can improve how the floor feels, noise levels and protection against moisture, and can help your flooring stay beautiful for years.

The result is simply flooring that feels identical to traditional wood but stays more stable in Canadian conditions. Since it is more stable, engineered hardwood can often be installed in areas in which solid wood is a risk, including below-grade rooms or over concrete slabs.

Underlayment can also compensates for minor imperfections in the base and provides a bit of softness underfoot. Keep in mind, however, it cannot replace a flat subfloor: large dips and bumps should be corrected beforehand.

Real wood continues to be a feature buyers ask for most. Engineered wood gives you that same premium look and greater stability across the seasons. If you need to control costs, luxury vinyl plank will deliver a similar wood look for less.

Luxury vinyl have become the most popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms. Waterproof cores mean that spills won’t damage the floor if cleaned up promptly. LVP is also warmer underfoot than ceramic, something a big bonus on cold Canadian mornings.

Luxury vinyl plank is usually the first recommendation for wWw.bAsKeTFErentinO.cOm families. It’s water-resistant, so spilled drinks are easy to clean up. A thick wear layer will help reduce scratches, and the softer surface feels less noisy than tile.

LVP is often the go-to floor below grade. Several LVP collections are completely water-resistant, so they won’t be damaged if humidity shows up. Rigid core planks can also hide minor imperfections in the concrete.

Can you still have hardwood? It is possible, but be selective. Dense species like oak, maple or hickory hold up better, while matte finishes or natural grain patterns hide small scratches better than a shiny finish.
