When shopping for new floors, they usually focus on colour, the style and price. Yet what lies beneath your planks is just as important. The right underlayment improves how the floor feels, noise levels and protection against moisture, and it helps your flooring last longer.

When your household includes dogs, cats or young children, you have probably learned how quickly floors take a beating. Pet nails, toy cars and blocks, accidents and snow and slush can wear down the wrong floor faster than you think. Fortunately: today’s flooring options are built to handle busy family life.

Tile remains very water-resistant, although it can feel cold unless install a heated floor system. Wall-to-wall carpet, on the other hand, is cozy yet may hold moisture, so carpet tiles are usually a better solution.

In the end, which floor makes sense? When the real thing and refinishing potential are your priority, go with hardwood. When budget, durability and easy maintenance are more important, quality laminate is a smart choice.

Hardwood is the classic choice. It offers natural character that is hard to copy, and it is often refinished more than once over its life. This allows quality hardwood can last for decades. Hardwood also increases the value of a home in many markets.

Houses across Canada experience dramatic changes in temperature and humidity from season to season. During winter, furnaces pull moisture from indoor air; in the warm months, moisture levels rise sharply. For wood flooring, these changes can cause gaps, crowning and movement.

The first thing to do is to consider how each room is used. A busy entryway calls for a durable, easy-care surface, whereas a master bedroom can focus more on warmth underfoot. Kitchens are best served by water-resistant products such as LVP or tile.

LVP is the first recommendation for pet owners. It’s waterproof or highly water-resistant, meaning spilled drinks become simple to handle. A durable top layer will help reduce scratches from claws, while its softer feel feels quieter for kids playing on the floor.

The right underlay can also hides slight unevenness in the base and adds a little softness underfoot. Note, though, that is not a substitute for levelling the subfloor: big height differences must be levelled beforehand.

Seasonal change also plays a big role. Traditional solid wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity, which means it is best installed with proper acclimatization and a good humidifier in winter. Engineered hardwood offers the beauty of real wood but with improved dimensional stability, which makes it a favourite across the country.

One of its main jobs is to provide acoustic insulation. Floating floors can sound hollow if installed directly on the subfloor. A quality underlayment dampens footstep noise, addthismark.club something that is especially useful in apartments and condos in which building rules often demand a minimum IIC or STC rating.

What about hardwood? Yes, though be selective. Dense species like hickory and white oak hold up better, while low-sheen finishes and natural grain patterns disguise everyday wear far better than glossy floors.

Budget remains a major consideration. Modern laminate provides a realistic wood look at a lower price, while luxury vinyl blends affordability and great water resistance. Remember to include the underlay, trims and moldings, and installation when comparing prices.

This is where engineered wood makes a difference. Instead of using a solid plank, engineered wood consists of several layers: a genuine wood veneer bonded to a plywood or HDF core. This layered structure limits the natural movement of wood.

Quality laminate is also a good contender. The protective top layer is tough against scuffs and scratches, in many cases more than other floors. Select laminates with an AC4 or AC5 rating plus good moisture protection for the best performance.

Before anything else, test the humidity of the concrete. A basic moisture test such as taping a plastic sheet to the floor for a day or two will indicate any moisture problem. Fix any leaks prior to installing anything.

Today’s laminate flooring has come a long way significantly. Good laminate products uses realistic printed designs and textured surfaces that appear very realistic. The protective surface keeps it very resistant to scuffs and scratches, and it costs lower. Many laminates now include water-resistant cores.

LVP is often the top option for basements. Many LVP collections are waterproof, so they won’t swell or rot when a small leak shows up. Rigid-core vinyl can also tolerate small irregularities in the slab.

Before buying, look closely at the thickness of the wear layer. A heavier top layer lets you sand it in the future, adding to the life of your floor. Remember to control humidity between roughly 35 and 55 percent for best results.

The outcome is simply a floor that looks just like traditional wood while stays more stable in our climate. Because it moves less, engineered hardwood is often suitable in areas in which solid wood is not recommended, like basements and over concrete slabs.
